SMART Recovery
A SMART Recovery app that speaks your language
If your recovery is built on self-management and evidence, not powerlessness and a higher power, Twelva fits the way you actually think. Science-based tools, plans in the SMART tradition, and a companion that never asks you to surrender to anything.
Get Twelva →SMART Recovery built something different. Where the older programs ask you to admit you're powerless, the SMART approach hands you the controls. It's a science-based, secular method rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) — the same ideas a good therapist would use — organized so you can practice them yourself, between meetings, in the moment an urge shows up.
Most recovery apps were built for one tradition and bolted everything else on later. Twelva was built the other way around: a companion broad enough to serve the path you've chosen, whether that's the Twelve Steps, a fully secular practice, or the self-empowering, CBT-rooted framework SMART Recovery is known for. This page is about that last one.
What the SMART approach actually is
SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. It's organized around a well-known four-point framework: building and maintaining your motivation to change, learning to cope with urges, managing the thoughts and feelings and behaviors underneath them, and living a balanced life you don't need to escape. There's no belief requirement, no powerlessness, no surrender step. The premise is that you can learn the skills, and then you use them.
The official SMART Recovery program is run by an independent nonprofit and offers free, volunteer-led meetings worldwide. Twelva isn't a substitute for those meetings, and it isn't affiliated with that organization. Think of Twelva as the quiet companion you carry between meetings — for the 2 a.m. craving, the rough commute, the Tuesday that gets heavy — built to support the same way of working.
How Twelva supports the SMART way of working
Plans in the SMART tradition
The Library includes reading and study plans tailored to each path, including the self-empowering, CBT-rooted SMART tradition — worked at your own pace, no belief requirement attached.
CBT-informed tools
Tools that mirror how the SMART approach works: noticing the thought behind an urge, riding it out instead of fighting it, and choosing your next move on purpose rather than on autopilot.
Mood and HALT check-ins
Quick check-ins for how you're feeling, plus a HALT scan — hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Naming the real driver is the first move in managing it, which is exactly the SMART instinct.
An AI sponsor that speaks SMART
The AI companion is tradition-aware. Choose the SMART path and it speaks self-empowerment and coping skills — never higher-power language you didn't ask for. Available day or night, for the hard moments.
Breathing tools for urge-surfing
Guided breathing to ride out a craving instead of bracing against it. A small, physical way to put a few minutes between the urge and the decision.
A private journal
Entries are encrypted on your device by default; optional cloud backup is encrypted too. Twelva never sells your data or trains models on it — a clear place to do the thinking SMART work asks for.
The AI sponsor, in your language
This is where most apps quietly assume one tradition. A 12-step app's chat will reach for surrender and a higher power; that's the right language for that path and the wrong language for yours. Twelva's AI sponsor reads the path you set. On the SMART path it talks the way the approach talks: what's the thought underneath this urge? what's it costing you? what would future-you want here? — the self-empowering, skills-first register, not powerlessness.
It's there for cravings and hard moments, day or night, and it's privacy-first by design: your recovery data is not used to train models. It's a companion for the in-between hours, not therapy and not a crisis line. If you're in danger, Twelva keeps crisis resources one tap away, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and SAMHSA's helpline at 1-800-662-4357.
SMART, the 12 steps, or both — your call
You don't have to pick a side. Some people run a purely SMART practice in Twelva and never touch a step. Others borrow what's useful from both. The app doesn't push you toward powerlessness or a higher power unless you choose a path that includes them.
| In Twelva | SMART path | 12-step path |

Beyond the tradition tools, everyone gets the same foundation: a lifetime "days earned" counter that never resets on a slip, sobriety streaks and milestones, 366 daily devotionals and 365 affirmations to draw from, and the crisis resources built in. The streak is there to encourage you, never to threaten you — a slip doesn't erase the days you've already earned.
Built for the vulnerable hours
Recovery isn't only the meeting; it's everything around it. Twelva is designed to be calm, dignified, and quiet about your business — encrypted journaling, on-device by default, no data sold, no shaming language anywhere. Whatever brought you to the SMART approach, the app meets you there without asking you to become someone else first.
Curious how it all works, or whether it's a fit? The full FAQ covers privacy, pricing, and what the app is and isn't. When you're ready, getting Twelva takes a minute, and the SMART path is one tap to set.
Common questions
Is Twelva affiliated with SMART Recovery?
No. Twelva is an independent recovery companion and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or part of SMART Recovery, which is a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Twelva supports the SMART approach the same way it supports several traditions, but the official SMART Recovery program, its meetings, and its trained facilitators are their own. If you want SMART meetings, you'll find them through SMART Recovery directly.
Do I have to do the 12 steps to use Twelva?
No. The 12 steps are one path inside Twelva, not the price of entry. You can build your whole experience around the SMART approach: choose SMART-tradition Library plans, use the CBT-informed tools, and set the AI sponsor to speak self-empowerment language instead of higher-power language. Nothing asks you to admit powerlessness or work the steps unless you choose to.
Is Twelva science-based?
Twelva's SMART path draws on the same cognitive and behavioral ideas SMART Recovery is built on: noticing the thought behind an urge, riding it out instead of fighting it, and choosing a response on purpose. The tools are CBT-informed and trauma-informed. Twelva is a recovery companion, not therapy, medical care, or emergency support; for clinical treatment, work with a licensed professional.
How much does the SMART Recovery support in Twelva cost?
Twelva is free to download. A subscription unlocks the full Library, the AI sponsor, and encrypted journal sync for $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year (USD), with a 7-day free trial and cancel anytime. SMART Recovery's own in-person and online meetings are run by SMART and are free to attend.
