What is Celebrate Recovery?

A Christian recovery community for anyone carrying a hurt, a hang-up, or a habit — not just substance addiction.

The short answer

Celebrate Recovery is a free, Christ-centered recovery program that helps people work through what it calls "hurts, hang-ups, and habits." That phrase is intentionally broad: while it serves people recovering from substance addiction, it also welcomes those dealing with codependency, grief, anger, eating struggles, and other painful patterns. Its foundation is explicitly Christian, centered on the belief that healing comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Eight recovery principles

The program is organized around eight recovery principles, which are based on the Beatitudes from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. In our own plain summary, these principles move a person through a journey that includes:

These are a paraphrase of the program's themes; Celebrate Recovery publishes its own full curriculum, which we do not reproduce here.

What a meeting feels like

A Celebrate Recovery gathering, often hosted by a local church, typically begins with a large-group time of worship and teaching, then breaks into smaller, gender-specific share groups. The smaller groups are confidential and built on listening rather than cross-talk or advice-giving. You do not need to register or announce yourself in advance — you can simply attend.

Who it tends to suit

Celebrate Recovery often resonates with people for whom Christian faith is central, who want their recovery and their spiritual life held together rather than kept separate. Because it addresses a wide range of struggles, people sometimes come for one issue and find support for several.

How it relates to the 12 steps

Celebrate Recovery shares roots with the 12-step tradition, and you may notice familiar themes of honesty, surrender, and amends. The key difference is that its steps and principles are explicitly tied to Christian faith and Scripture, where AA keeps its spiritual language open to any understanding of a higher power. People sometimes move between the two, or attend both.

Where to start

Celebrate Recovery's own website has a group locator to help you find a local ministry near you. Meetings are free, there is no need to register in advance, and you are welcome to attend and simply listen until you feel ready to take part.

Common questions

Is Celebrate Recovery only for addiction?

No. Celebrate Recovery is for anyone facing a "hurt, hang-up, or habit." That includes substance addiction, but also things like codependency, grief, anger, and other painful patterns. Many people come for one struggle and find support for several.

Do I have to be a Christian to attend Celebrate Recovery?

Celebrate Recovery is explicitly Christ-centered and rooted in Christian faith, but its meetings are open and you do not need to be a member of any church to attend. People exploring faith, or simply seeking support, are welcome.

How is Celebrate Recovery different from AA?

Both share roots in the 12 steps, but Celebrate Recovery is openly Christian — built on eight recovery principles drawn from the Beatitudes and centered on Jesus Christ — whereas AA is spiritual but not tied to any specific religion, with a "higher power" each member defines.
