AA vs SMART Recovery

Two of the most widely used recovery programs take very different routes to the same place. Here is how they actually compare.

The short version

AA and SMART Recovery both work, both are free, and both rely on regular meetings. The difference is philosophy. AA is a spiritual fellowship that asks you to work the 12 steps with a sponsor and lean on a higher power of your own understanding. SMART Recovery is a secular, science-based program that teaches you a toolkit of cognitive-behavioral techniques to manage cravings and rebuild your life — no steps, no sponsor, no higher power.

When AA tends to fit

If you value fellowship, a clear framework, one-to-one mentoring through a sponsor, and you are open to (or actively want) a spiritual dimension, AA's enormous meeting network means you can almost always find a room — anywhere, any day.

When SMART tends to fit

If you prefer a secular approach, want to understand the "why" behind your behavior, and like practical, evidence-based tools you can apply on your own, SMART's toolkit and self-empowerment model often resonate. Its online meetings are especially accessible.

You don't have to choose just one

Recovery is not a competition between programs. Many people attend both AA and SMART, or move between them over time. What matters is finding the support you will actually keep showing up for.

Common questions

Is SMART Recovery better than AA?

Neither is universally "better" — they suit different people. AA offers spiritual fellowship and the widest meeting network; SMART offers a secular, CBT-based toolkit. The best program is the one you will keep attending.

Can I do both AA and SMART Recovery?

Yes. They are not mutually exclusive, and many people use both — for example, AA for fellowship and SMART for practical craving-management tools.

Does SMART Recovery use the 12 steps?

No. SMART has no steps and no higher power. It uses a 4-Point Program and a set of cognitive-behavioral tools instead.
